A Liturgy of Departure

God,
That knows our coming and our going,

We are a community that is diverse,
From many places,
From many upbringings,
From many races,
From many identities.

Some of us are departing church structure
In order to embrace the love of Jesus.
Others of us are departing belief altogether
Too traumatized by religion to trust in you.

You’re not shocked or scared by the departures,
But we can sometimes feel lost and frightened.
Frightened of what we may be losing in the leaving.
We can also at times feel freedom and peace.
Peace that overcomes the pain and trauma.

As we depart, it’s hard to say where we’ll end up.
Wherever that is, let it be filled with love.
With acceptance.
With provision.
With community.
With healing.

If you are there, God,
Let us find you to be welcoming.

If you are there, Jesus,
Let us encounter the depth of your love.

If you are there, Spirit,
Let us experience your acceptance.

Amen.
