To They which have full dominion,
On this Sunday, there should be two celebrations.
One, as individuals gather to sing and celebrate freedom you’ve provided through love.
Another, as individuals gather to party and celebrate freedom as a nation.
Both are worthy of celebration.
But for many, those celebrations will be combined.
Both will be worshiped.
Both will be glorified.
Both will be proclaimed as holy.
We have seen this form of Christian nationalism flourish in recent years,
And it has been one of many reasons we have left the church.
Remind us today that your kingdom looks much different than this nation.
That freedom doesn’t come from battles and wars,
But from grace, mercy, and love.
That you are present in every part of this world,
And not just found in the walls of American evangelicalism.
God,
We know that Christian nationalism is antithetical to your kingdom,
Your love,
Your plan.
Jesus,
We know that no other person,
No other leader,
is worthy of worship but you.
Spirit,
On this day especially,
break the chains of nationalism;
Separate church and state,
So that your people would
Not worship a flag,
But Jesus alone.
Amen.
